Following news in March that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was looking into reports of faulty airbags in cars made by Kia and its affiliate Hyundai, Kia has announced that it’s recalling more than half a million vehicles in the U.S. because of this issue. If president Donald Trump slaps a 25 percent tariff on imported cars, it may cost the U.S auto industry 1 million annual car sales, and that’s just the low end of the estimated damage. Sales of plug-in hybrid cars soared by almost three-quarters year on year in May, dramatically outstripping the 3.4% overall growth in new car registrations. Nearly 4,000 plug-in hybrids were bought last month, up from 2,301 in May 2017. Registrations of purely battery-powered cars were up by nearly a fifth, to 1,099.
