  • New Tariffs Could Slow the Import of Chinese Made Cars
    05 Apr 2018

Donald Trump proposed a 25 percent tariff on some goods, including automobiles, imported from China. This could put a kink in the plans of Ford, GM, Volvo as well as the Chinese brand Guangzhou Automobile Group, who planned to enter the US market next year.  Volvo is importing S60 Inscription since 2015 from China; GM imports the Cadillac CT6 plug-in hybrid and Buick Envision; Ford was planning on starting to build the Focus Compact there and importing it.  China retaliated, announcing its own 25 percent tax on imports including chemicals, soybeans, aircraft, and cars...

  • The 3 hottest-selling new vehicles of 2017
    25 Jan 2018

If we take a look at the list of 2017's hottest U.S. vehicles, we'll see that none of them are passenger cars. Americans are fleeing passenger cars in droves. Instead, they're embracing roomy crossovers, sport-utility vehicles and pickup trucks with vastly improved fuel economy over days gone by. Here were 2017's three hottest-selling vehicles.  Ford F-series: The Blue Oval automaker's marquee nameplate easily maintained its title as the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. Sales were up 9.3% for the year. With sales of 896,764 units for the year, the vehicle accounte...

  • Toyota and Lexus rank the top 2 brands for reliability again
    19 Oct 2017

Based on costumer reports Toyota and Lexus rank the top 2 brands for reliability for the fifth year in a row. The rankings of the remaining 25 brands reflect a game of musical chairs, however. Consumer Reports' 2017 Auto Reliability Survey found "growing pains" among automakers with new and updated cars and light trucks, with "wonky" engines and "jerky" eight- and nine-speed and continuously variable transmissions, as well as infotainment systems, among the top problems.  The magazine said its survey shows some but not all automakers are quick to res...

  • Trump might switch to a bilateral trade pact with Canada
    11 Oct 2017

If Donald Trump won’t reach the deal with Mexico to substantially revise the North American Free Trade Agreement, he could switch to a bilateral trade pact with Canada. He said to reporters he could envision maintaining free trade with Canada.  He spoke at the White House alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on a visit to try to convince the U.S. leader of NAFTA's merits as a new round of renegotiations began near Washington. Asked about Trump's comments at a news conference later, Trudeau said he was still optimistic about the chances of modernizing the 19...

  • May car sales: Does anyone still want to buy a new car?
    01 Jun 2017

Automakers are expected to report flat US car sales in May vs. a year earlier after demand fell in the first four months of 2017. Smaller and crossover SUVs are expected to offset continued weakness in cars, with General Motors likely to be the biggest beneficiary. Fiat Chrysler and Ford Motor are likely to see new-vehicle sales fall. Japanese automakers such as Honda should eke out tiny gains while South Korea's Hyundai-Kia, with far more cars in the vehicle mix, could see the biggest drop. Tesla does not provide monthly sales figures. Tesla will soon start rolling out its mass-market Mod...
