  • Mercedes marks new G-Class by recalling top 9 moments in G-Wagen history
    14 Nov 2017

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class goes primetime at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. Intel so far points to four inches of additional width and a wider track, some extra length, electromechanical steering, independent front suspension, a new instrument panel and infotainment controls, and nearly a quarter-ton weight loss. As for the exterior packaging, here's your spoiler alert: Don't expect a design revolution, expect a smoother cinder block.  While we look forward to Detroit, Mercedes would have us look back through the history of the G-Class. • U.S. car sales fell 1.3% in October compared with a year ago
    02 Nov 2017

The hurricane recovery and the strong truck and SUV sales weren’t enough to keep the U.S. car sales high in October. Sales for the month fell 1.3 percent compared with a year ago as slowing demand made it almost certain that 2017 will be the first year with declining sales in seven years. Full-year sales almost certainly will fall below last year's record of more than 17.5 million, although most analysts say demand is still healthy. Automakers reported selling 1.35 million vehicles for the month.  Ford, Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen all reported gains for October on ...

Jeep has unmasked its long-awaited redisigned 2018 Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited, as a surprise on Halloween. As expected, a redesigned roof will provide additional rollover protection compared with the previous design; owners will still be able to remove the top. Most of the styling changes in the new...

    30 Oct 2017

Cadillac and Audi might already tour their semiautonomous driving systems, but BMW is taking some more time before rolling out a high-speed self-driving system. BMW is spending the next couple of years working with suppliers and testing prototypes to ensure the automaker can introduce a system that can operate at high speeds in most highway driving situations, with the added benefit of being a backup operator in fully automated vehicles.  BMW's system won't be available until 2021, which puts it several years behind competitors. BMW chose to wait until it could introduce a sy...

  • Ford and VW pressured by green groups to support clean-car standards
    25 Oct 2017

Ford and Volkswagen have to face new problems, as a new coalition of environmental groups have launched a campaign to persuade automakers to live by their commitments for meeting emissions and fuel economy targets for the next decade. It accused the industry of colluding with the Trump administration to loosen the clean-car standards. The coalition initially plans to pressure Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen Group of America to publicly support the fuel efficiency program, one of President Barack Obama's key initiatives for curbing greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. It w...
