The next-generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class goes primetime at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. Intel so far points to four inches of additional width and a wider track, some extra length, electromechanical steering, independent front suspension, a new instrument panel and infotainment controls, and nearly a quarter-ton weight loss. As for the exterior packaging, here's your spoiler alert: Don't expect a design revolution, expect a smoother cinder block. The range of the average battery-electric family crossover has increased to nearly 400 miles on a single charge, after years of continued incremental improvements in lithium-based batteries, combined with extreme weight savings from lightweight materials, a new generation of superefficient electric motors, and advances in automated driving that reduce energy waste. The new generation of fast chargers enables vehicles with depleted battery packs to be 80 percent recharged in the time it takes to down a cup of Tim Horton's coffee and doughnut, about five minutes. There are some serious issues on the 2017-18 Infiniti QX30 crossovers. Because of poor grounding of steering components could cause the driver-side airbag to deploy, potentially injuring the driver and resulting in a crash. This is why Nissan North America decided to recall all of them. The company notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last week after receiving information about the potential problem in September from supplier Daimler AG. Nissan said 17,507 vehicles are affected. Vehicle owners will begin to receive notifications about the problem and how to ge...
BMW AG is recalling about 1 million vehicles in North America for two separate issues involving fire risks and said it may expand the recalls to other countries. One recall covers 670,000 2006-2011 U.S. 3-Series vehicles to address a wiring issue for heating and air conditioning systems that may overheat and could increase the risk of a fire. The second recall covers 740,000 U.S. 2007-2011 vehicles with a valve heater that could rust and lead to a fire in rare cases. The recall includes some 128i vehicles, 3-Series, 5-Series and X3, X5 and Z4 vehicles. BMW spokesman Michael Rebstock...
Heading into the final 2 months of the year, we’ve got some records on the line for the U.S. automotive industry. Japanese automakers are battling for the titles of America’s best selling cars and crossovers, and the overall industry could record a third straight 17 million-unit year for the first time ever. The overall industry this year has shown some restraint on incentives, but spending has steadily increased amid leveling average transaction prices. Expect incentive spending for the year to be up 11 percent through October to an average of $3,624 per vehicle, includi...
