  • The car industry is waiting for its own "iPhone"
    24 Sep 2017

We’ve been waiting for something to change dramatically the automotive industry, just like the iPhone did to the mobile industry 10 years ago, and that one thing that could make it all different is the electrification of cars. The rise of Tesla and its rivals could be boosted by complementary services from Uber and Alphabet's Waymo unit, just as the iPhone rode the app economy and fast mobile internet to decimate mobile phone giants like Nokia. The culmination of these technologies — autonomous electric cars available on demand — could transform how people travel and...

  • Tesla is getting closer to testing autonomous trucks
    10 Aug 2017

While Tesla Inc is developing a long-haul, electric semi-truck that can drive itself and move in “platoons” that automatically follow a lead vehicle, and is getting closer to testing a prototype, California officials are meeting with the automaker’s officials to talk about its efforts with autonomous trucks.  The correspondence and meeting show that Tesla is putting self-driving technology into the electric truck it has said it plans to unveil in September, and is advancing towards real-life tests, potentially moving it forward in a highly competitive area of commer...

  • Fully electric car sales up 86% in 2017
    02 Aug 2017

Despite the good promotion and ecstatic headlines about the new Tesla Model 3, the car hasn’t managed yet to become number 1, the green market is still being dominated by its big sister Model S. The Chevy Bolt, with a record sales month, took the #2 spot, inching out my estimate for the Model X. After that, the plug-in hybrid Toyota Prius Prime and Chevy Volt round out the top 5.  Despite the addition of some extremely quick competitors on its track, the Nissan LEAF landed a healthy monthly sales total — still well above 1,000 cars a month — to take the #6 spot. Aft...

  • Panasonic's auto business to become the real driving force?
    31 May 2017

Although Panasonic Corp. is an electronics company, it's becoming quite the rev head. The Japanese brand that's indelibly associated with televisions, audio equipment and microwave ovens now makes more money from auto parts than home appliances. In presentations to investors, the company divides its product portfolio into three business characteristics: high-growth, low-growth and low-profitable. At the top of that tree is automotive batteries, car cockpits and advanced driver assistance systems. The only non-vehicle segment enjoying management's high-growth optimism is air conditi...

  • Cobalt prices rise due to demand of lithium ion batteries
    02 Mar 2017

Cobalt’s automakers are using lithium ion batteries since they are preparing for an increase in electric production. These batteries will be used in both electric and hybrid vehicles. Shanghai Chaos Investments and Switzerland-based Pala Investments as two of the companies that invested in cobalt last year, although the amount they’ve stockpiled is unknown. On Dec. 1, cobalt was just around $30,000 per metric tonne. One metric tonne equals 2,204 pounds. As of Monday, one metric tonne of cobalt was $49,000. That’s an increase of 63 percent in three months. However, EVs have not...
