The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Friday it was rejecting a petition by Ford to delay recall of about 3 million cars with potentially defective Takata airbag inflators. The agency said it did not find the request by the second largest U.S. automaker to defer a recall until additional testing was conducted "reasonable under the circumstances or supported by the testing and data it has collected to date." Takata inflators can explode with excessive force, unleashing metal shrapnel inside cars and trucks. At least 18 deaths and 180 injuries world...
With the launch of GM’s next-generation EV platform in 2021 the company is pretty convinced its electrified vehicle business will get more profitable. Automakers have been losing money for years on all-electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Bolt in exchange for meeting tighter environmental regulations while positioning themselves for an expected increase in demand for alternative powertrains. The last time Shujiro Urata wanted to buy a new car in Japan, his phone happened to ring. It was the local Toyota dealer on the phone, asking him if he was thinking about buying a new car. When he replied in the affirmative, the dealer and a coworker showed up at Urata’s doorstep an hour later with two demo cars, which Urata and his wife test-drove around the neighborhood. The Uratas decided to buy a car from the dealer. The dealer also handles their ca...
Heading into the final 2 months of the year, we’ve got some records on the line for the U.S. automotive industry. Japanese automakers are battling for the titles of America’s best selling cars and crossovers, and the overall industry could record a third straight 17 million-unit year for the first time ever. The overall industry this year has shown some restraint on incentives, but spending has steadily increased amid leveling average transaction prices. Expect incentive spending for the year to be up 11 percent through October to an average of $3,624 per vehicle, includi...
