    More than 1 million Mercedes-Benz cars and SUVs are being recalled by Daimler worldwide. The safety recall covers 495,000 vehicles in the U.S., 400,000 in Britain, 76,000 in Canada and a few hundred thousand in Germany, company officials said. The automaker did not immediately have a complete worldwide total.  An electrostatic discharge, coupled with a broken clock spring and insufficient grounding of steering components, can lead to inadvertent deployment of the driver side front airbag in vehicles subject to the recall, the company said on Monday.     Analysts are lowering estimates for 2017 vehicle sales after five months of industrywide deliveries declining from a year earlier. Among the reasons: automakers are showing more restraint on discounts than expected and gridlock in Washington reduces the likelihood of a second-half surge.   • Audi March U.S. sales rise 2%

    Audi of America reported a March sales increase of 2 percent to 18,705 vehicles, as the Q5, Q3 and A4 led the volume gains. March 2017 marked the 75th consecutive month of record sales for Audi of America. The previous March record was set last year with 18,392 vehicles sold.  SUV sales remained strong with the volume-leading Q5 posting sales of 4,382 vehicles, an increase of 18 percent for the month.   • General Motors to lay off 1,100 workers

    General Motors promised us other things but that’s how it all turned to be, even if it said it will invest $1 billion in U.S. factories now it announced to temporarily cut off 1,100 workers in May as its Lansing Delta Township assembly plant in Michigan shifts production to Tennessee. Last year it added 800 jobs at its spring hill, Tennessee plant to build the new version of GMC Acadia SUV.  The Lansing plant will continue building the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse after it retools for a month.
