For people who live in such a big state as Texas, driving is more like a way of life. The average Texas motorist logs more than 16,000 miles behind the wheel each year, far more than the average American. Nationally, nearly 1 in 10 new vehicle registrations occurs in the Lone Star State. The central role cars play in Texas means that policies that impact the automobile industry affect us more than most. The tax reform package being considered by Congress has many benefits — but a major wrinkle in the Senate version could force some dealerships in Texas to shutter. That would d...
Four years ago, CEO Masamichi Kogai predicted Mazda would be notching annual U.S. sales of 400,000 cars by now. Instead, it is in a second-straight year of decline, with volume under 300,000 and market share retreating from an erstwhile goal of 2 percent. Now Kogai claims the U.S. resurgence will start in earnest in 2019 and kick into overdrive in 2021 when Mazda adds an all-new crossover designed for and built exclusively in the U.S. Giving first details of the new nameplate in a Nov. 16 interview, Kogai said it has potential to be the brand's best-seller. Hackers stole the personal data of 57 million customers and drivers from Uber Technologies Inc., a massive breach that the company concealed for more than a year. This week, the ride-hailing firm ousted its chief security officer and one of his deputies for their roles in keeping the hack under wraps, which included a $100,000 payment to the attackers. Compromised data from the October 2016 attack included names, email addresses and phone numbers of 50 million Uber riders around the world, the company said Tuesday. The personal information of about 7 million drivers was accessed as ...
Tesla faces a lawsuit for racial discrimination at its California production plant. It’s at least the third filed this year by black workers who say they were addressed using racial slurs and that the company ignored their complaints. But Monday's lawsuit, filed by former Tesla employee Marcus Vaughn, is the first to bring those claims on behalf of a large class of black workers at the automaker's Fremont, Calif., factory. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. The company is also facing lawsuits accusing it of discrimination against gay and older workers. It ...
You might not know that, but in Japan the relationship between the car dealer and the buyer is a much better one than here, in the U.S.. The last time Shujiro Urata wanted to buy a new car in Japan, his phone happened to ring. It was the local Toyota dealer on the phone, asking him if he was thinking about buying a new car. When he replied in the affirmative, the dealer and a coworker showed up at Urata’s doorstep an hour later with two demo cars, which Urata and his wife test-drove around the neighborhood. The Uratas decided to buy a car from the dealer. The dealer also handles their ca...
