The new tax reform could force some dealerships in Texas to shutter

For people who live in such a big state as Texas, driving is more like a way of life. The average Texas motorist logs more than 16,000 miles behind the wheel each year, far more than the average American. Nationally, nearly 1 in 10 new vehicle registrations occurs in the Lone Star State.

The central role cars play in Texas means that policies that impact the automobile industry affect us more than most. The tax reform package being considered by Congress has many benefits — but a major wrinkle in the Senate version could force some dealerships in Texas to shutter. That would devastate Texas motorists and jeopardize more than 200,000 jobs. Earlier this month, the U.S. House passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, a comprehensive reform of the nation’s tax code. The bill kept in place a rule that allows local dealerships to deduct the “floor plan interest expense” they pay on the loans they rely on to purchase cars.

Dealer’s tax bill will be increased by a whopping $650,000. And that would crush their business.

Borrowing so much capital is risky for any business. But it’s an especially large expense for car dealerships, as most are small operations. In Texas, most dealerships employ around 50 people. And because of price competition among same-brand dealerships, the profit margins on new cars are razor thin.

  • General Motors to lay off 1,100 workers
    06 Mar 2017

General Motors promised us other things but that’s how it all turned to be, even if it said it will invest $1 billion in U.S. factories now it announced to temporarily cut off 1,100 workers in May as its Lansing Delta Township assembly plant in Michigan shifts production to Tennessee. Last year it added 800 jobs at its spring hill, Tennessee plant to build the new version of GMC Acadia SUV.  The Lansing plant will continue building the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse after it retools for a month. GM also has announced other U.S. factory cuts. U.S. President Donald Trump ha...

  • Car Ownership Will Probably Dip by 2025
    22 May 2018

Most auto industry execs think that half of today’s car owners will lose interest in owning a car by 2025. Of the nearly 1,000 execs surveyed via KPMG for Business Insider Intelligence, 60 percent agree, while 22 disagree, and 8 percent strongly disagree.  That’s not very representative because it targets people who already see the value of a car and ignores millennials who may never own a vehicle. While there is some mixed opinion about millennial attitudes toward car ownership. That generation is buying fewer cars than previous generations at their age.  ...

  • Volvo Will Dump Diesel Starting With Next S60 Sedan
    18 May 2018

Volvo will not offer a diesel in its new S60 sedan, which will be released this spring. The new S60 will be available with a range of four-cylinder gasoline engines as well as two versions of its gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain.  This move comes as Volvo accelerates its shift toward electrified powertrains and away from diesels, which accounted for almost 80 percent of its sales in Europe last year. Diesel sales have taken a hit in Europe because of potential bans on older, more polluting cars with the powertrain and the high cost of improvements to ensure that new d...
