The U.S. demand for hybrids and plug-ins is again ruled by domestic automakers, plug-in vehicle sales surged about 45% to almost 15,000 units. In addition to Tesla, which continues to boost sales but doesn't publish monthly metrics, Ford and General Motors each performed well in May. Green-car sales for the Blue Oval rose 56 percent from a year earlier to 9,221 vehicles, as Fusion Hybrid sales more than doubled, while Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid sales jumped 77 percent. Up the road, General Motors increased green-car sales by 50 ...
Audi's U.S. chief expects the brand to post another U.S. sales record in 2017. It's an ambitious goal, given that U.S. sales this year are expected to be flat, especially in the luxury car market. Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America, said he's convinced Audi can do it — without resorting to excessive incentives — based on the strength of its lineup. Keogh says they broke through 210,000 units last year. He thinks it's worth pointing out that if we look at Audi America in general, it took them 40 years to sell 100,000 cars for the very first time. Th...
We’re used to seeing the South Korean automotive business flourishing, which is why we were a bit surprised when Hyundai Motor and its smaller sibling Kia Motors revealed these poor sales for May. These car companies registered double-digit fall against a year-ago period as they face tougher challenge from Chinese rivals in the largest automobile market. Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors shipped out a total of 482,968 vehicles last month, down 14.3 percent from a year earlier. Overseas sales of Hyundai Motor came to 307,362 units, down 16.5 percent on year, while those of Kia Motor...
Sales of BMW brand vehicles decreased 11.0 percent in May for a total of 25,818 compared to 29,017 vehicles sold in May 2016. Year-to-date, the BMW brand is down 3.6 percent in the U.S. on sales of 120,124 vehicles compared to 124,581 sold in the first five months of 2016. Notable vehicle sales in May include the BMW 5 Series which increased 12.7 percent to 3,677 cars, the BMW X1 which increased 12.6 percent to 2,489 vehicles, and the BMW X3 which increased 21.7 percent to 4,011 vehicles. Bernhard Kuhnt, President and CEO, BMW of North America, says that the all-new BMW 5 Series is ...
US May car sales finally revealed and surprisingly Ford Motor edged its archival and perennial first-place automaker General Motors sales when it came to sales last month. Although likely a temporary blip, Ford outsold crosstown rival GM by about 3,000 new cars and trucks in May, making it temporarily the largest automaker in the U.S. market. It was the first time Ford outsold GM since March 2016. Before that, it hadn't happened since March 2011. Ford's sales rose 2.4% for the month compared to the same month last year, GM was down 1.4% and the third of Detroit's Big 3, ...
