  • Automakers react to Trump winning the presidential elections
    10 Nov 2016

Major automakers are seizing on the infancy of President-elect Donald Trump’s administration to mount a push to ease regulatory headaches faced under President Obama. In a letter to Trump’s White House transition team today, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers proposed that the new administration pause a key step in the ongoing midterm evaluation of the Obama administration’s 2025 fuel economy and greenhouse rules until Trump’s administration can “lead efforts” with regulators and automakers on “a pathway forward” for the final four ye...

  • Tesla battles Utah in Supreme Court over right to sell direct
    09 Nov 2016

Tesla Motors has approached the Utah Supreme Court to get approval to sell its electric vehicles directly to the public without a third-party dealership, the Salt Lake Tribune says. For the past year, legislators within the state have voted against allowing the California-based automaker to pursue its distribution model. The Utah Supreme Court is expected to take a few weeks to rule on the issue.  By approaching the court, Tesla's making good on the intentions made by Tesla chief Elon Musk this summer. Earlier this year, Tesla and Utah were working towards a potential compromise ...

  • General Motors is laying off 2000 workers
    09 Nov 2016

Bad news don't come alone, so as the car sales decline from month to month, General Motors said it will lay off 2,000 workers because of slowing car sales even as it makes new investments in its plants.  GM said it plans to cut the third shift at its Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan and Lordstown Assembly Plant in Ohio in January because sales of cars made at those plants are declining. The automaker assembles the Cadillac ATS and CTS and the Chevrolet Camaro at its plant in Lansing and makes the Chevrolet Cruze at its plant in Lordstown. GM had a slight increase in...

  • Volvo plans to recall 74,000 U.S. vehicles for seat belt risk
    08 Nov 2016

Volvo is recalling about 74,000 U.S. vehicles for an issue that might cause a seat belt to inadequately restrain passengers in a crash. The recall impacts each Volvo S60, S90, V60, XC60 and XC90 vehicles from the 2016-17 model years.  The issue is caused by a connecting pin in the seat belt buckle, which could cause the seat belt to work inadequately during a crash. Volvo spokesman Jim Nichols said the move is “mainly precautionary,” as no incidents have been reported. He said Volvo sent out a recall notice on Oct. 28. Volvo dealers have been instructed to inspect each of...

  • US electric car sales continue to trend up
    07 Nov 2016

Despite many buyers holding out for a coming Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3, US electric car sales are doing great. Based on sales estimates for Tesla models (since Tesla doesn’t break out sales by month or by country), the Model S dropped to #2 and the Model X held onto #3 in the US car market, while the Chevy Volt rose to #1. However, if you look at how close sales of these models are and take into account that Tesla delivered ~3,000 more Model S sedans in the US, it’s hard to know how the top 3 ranking actually plays out.  After the top 3, though, there’s a signifi...
