While Tesla Inc is developing a long-haul, electric semi-truck that can drive itself and move in “platoons” that automatically follow a lead vehicle, and is getting closer to testing a prototype, California officials are meeting with the automaker’s officials to talk about its efforts with autonomous trucks. The correspondence and meeting show that Tesla is putting self-driving technology into the electric truck it has said it plans to unveil in September, and is advancing towards real-life tests, potentially moving it forward in a highly competitive area of commer...
The average fuel economy of new light vehicles sold in the U.S. in July was 25.4 mpg, up 0.3 mpg from June, the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute said Tuesday. The increase is attributed to a decreased proportion of light trucks in the market in July compared to June. Year-over-year U.S. light-vehicle sales slid 6.9 percent in July, with car deliveries descending 14.8 percent. Across the truck segment, pickup sales dropped 1.1 percent while crossover sales increased 1.2 percent last month. Light-truck sales, including crossovers, were down 1.9 percent. July...
Genesis has amazing plans for this month, first of all it will announce a new retail strategy for the U.S., it will accelerate the separation of the automaker from the Hyundai marque, and of course will cut the number of dealerships to sell Genesis models. The transition, which was supposed to be several years off, likely will be messy and costly for Hyundai and the culled Genesis dealers. It comes less than two years after Hyundai announced the creation of the Genesis brand, barely a year after it officially put the G80 and G90 sedans on sale and just ahead of the launch of a critical ne...
Toyota dealers have been crying for more Tacomas and now they'll finally get some relief. The Japanese automaker has struggled to crank out enough of the segment-leading midsize pickup at its Texas and Mexico factories, even with years of overtime. Now, thanks to the partnership announced last week with Mazda, Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz is prepared to turn on the spigot to fend off midsize pickup challengers. Toyota will build a $1.6 billion U.S. auto plant at a site to be chosen in a 50-50 partnership with Mazda that nets each of them 150,000 vehicles a year in addition...
With Tesla Model 3 deliveries beginning, July may be the last month for a while in which the growth of green-car sales in the U.S. can be measured with some sense of accuracy and perspective, as all signs point to a spike in year-over-year growth from here on out. And with that in mind, things didn't look great last month. In fact, year-over-year sales of hybrids and plug-in vehicles were down for the first time this year, falling 9.6 percent from a year earlier to about 37,600 units. Plug-in-vehicle sales remained on the positive side of the ledger, though they slowed to a 16 ...
