    08 Aug 2017

Guess who’s gonna sell its electric battery business to GSR Capital? Yes, it’s Nissan. In its statement Nissan revealed that the business which GSR will buy includes battery operations in Japan, England and of course U.S.. The sale covers Nissan's battery manufacturing operations in Smyrna, Tennessee, owned by Nissan North America; in Sunderland, England, owned by Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK; and part of Nissan's Japanese battery development and production engineering operations in Oppama, Atsugi and Zama. Nissan will first take full control of its battery subsidiary...

  • Fully electric car sales up 86% in 2017
    02 Aug 2017

Despite the good promotion and ecstatic headlines about the new Tesla Model 3, the car hasn’t managed yet to become number 1, the green market is still being dominated by its big sister Model S. The Chevy Bolt, with a record sales month, took the #2 spot, inching out my estimate for the Model X. After that, the plug-in hybrid Toyota Prius Prime and Chevy Volt round out the top 5.  Despite the addition of some extremely quick competitors on its track, the Nissan LEAF landed a healthy monthly sales total — still well above 1,000 cars a month — to take the #6 spot. Aft...

  • Panasonic's auto business to become the real driving force?
    31 May 2017

Although Panasonic Corp. is an electronics company, it's becoming quite the rev head. The Japanese brand that's indelibly associated with televisions, audio equipment and microwave ovens now makes more money from auto parts than home appliances. In presentations to investors, the company divides its product portfolio into three business characteristics: high-growth, low-growth and low-profitable. At the top of that tree is automotive batteries, car cockpits and advanced driver assistance systems. The only non-vehicle segment enjoying management's high-growth optimism is air conditi...

    02 Mar 2017

Cobalt’s automakers are using lithium ion batteries since they are preparing for an increase in electric production. These batteries will be used in both electric and hybrid vehicles. Shanghai Chaos Investments and Switzerland-based Pala Investments as two of the companies that invested in cobalt last year, although the amount they’ve stockpiled is unknown. On Dec. 1, cobalt was just around $30,000 per metric tonne. One metric tonne equals 2,204 pounds. As of Monday, one metric tonne of cobalt was $49,000. That’s an increase of 63 percent in three months. However, EVs have not...

  • Germans want us to ban the internal combustion engines by 2030
    10 Oct 2016

German politicians are calling for a total ban on internal combustion engines by 2030, and, not content with deciding their own affairs, they also want it to apply across the whole European Union. Although we can agree a bit on the thing that plug-in cars are better for the environment, we were thinking on how will the EU react to that? People are used to these powerful petrol cars, and banning them wouldn't it mean banning all of the car lovers?  The Bundesrat, or federal council, is asking the EU not just to consider its proposals to outlaw petrol and diesel cars, but to implem...
