For the second time in its history Tesla Motors Inc. reported net income, making $22 million net for the third quarter. This month, Tesla said it delivered 24,500 cars in the third quarter, putting it on track to hit its goal of 50,000 vehicle sales for the second half of 2016. A significant part of Tesla’s third quarter revenue came from pollution credits it sold to other automakers. In the third quarter, Tesla booked $139 million in those credits, up from $39 million a year ago. The company said it expects revenue from those credits to decline in the fourth quarter. Quarterl...

Almost a week passes without some announcement from automakers, suppliers – even ride-hailing services – about the impending arrival of self-driving cars. Experts claim that a fully automated vehicle that is 100 percent safe 100 percent of the time and can operate on any street in any weather condition in the U.S. is not right around the corner. The obstacles to perfecting and mass producing fully automated vehicles that can safely transport a passenger door-to-door with no human intervention are formidable: sensing equipment, such as cameras, lidar and radar, has to ge...
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s U.S. unit failed to persuade a federal judge to throw out an antitrust lawsuit claiming it pushed dealers to submit fraudulent sales numbers to prop up the carmaker’s share price. Two dealerships owned by the Napleton Auto Group, including Napleton’s Arlington Heights Motors in Illinois, originally sued Fiat Chrysler in January, alleging racketeering, violations of antitrust laws and breach of contract. The original suit was never served on FCA and an amended complaint was filed in March. FCA denied the allegations in the suit. U.S. D...
Although demand for SUVs and pickups continues to flourish, total U.S. new-vehicle (retail and fleet) sales in September are anticipated to dip 0.8% to less than 1.43 million units vs. 1.44 million unit sales in the same month of 2015. Despite a record level of incentive spending, Labor Day weekend sales, which are traditionally robust, were down 1% from last year, based on sales data collected during the first two weeks of September. The month’s retail deliveries are set to reach 1.185 million units, off 1.4% from last September’s 1.2 million. Fleet sales are expected ...
