2016 was the third straight year Americans bought fewer hybrids, plug-ins, and diesels than the year before. Even so, we have all the signs for the industry to get well in 2017, and show positive sales and new records. Last year, green car sales fell about 11 percent from the previous year, to about 446,000 units. We say "about" because Tesla Motors continues to be cagey when it comes to breaking out how many of its electric vehicles were purchased in the US, while South Korea's Hyundai and its sister company Kia are among those who won't break out hybrid sales at all. 2...
Volkswagen Group led automotive spending on Advertising Age’s 2016 list of the top 100 advertisement spenders worldwide. A U.S. judge in New Jersey on Tuesday threw out a proposed class action lawsuit alleging that Mercedes misled consumers about emissions standards in "BlueTec Clean Diesel" vehicles. The judge said the plaintiffs failed to show they actually viewed any of Mercedes' advertisements touting the cleaner technology. He gave them leave to revise their complaint. Automakers that market diese...
If you want to analyse the US green car sales for November, you first have to start with the fact that Volkswagen stopped selling its diesel vehicles for a year now. That means that, statistically, demand levels for hybrids, plug-ins and diesels in November could finally be measured on an even playing field for the first time in 2016. But there's more to the story of what was easily this year's most impressive month for green-car sales. Americans bought more than 39,000 green cars in November, marking a 26-percent surge from a year earlier. For comparison purposes, October a...
U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer on Tuesday delayed a court hearing set for Wednesday on Volkswagen Group's plan to address 80,000 polluting Audi, Porsche and VW 3.0-liter vehicles. In a court order, Breyer said negotiations are continuing between the German automaker, regulators and lawyers representing owners, and he set a Dec. 16 hearing, saying he had been advised that a delay "may produce a resolution of the outstanding issues." VW had reached an agreement with U.S. regulators for a mix of buybacks and fixes for the 80,000 vehicles, but still needed to reach agreement on o...
