  • What Trump's election could mean to auto industry
    07 Dec 2016

Donald Trump tangled with the auto industry during the presidential campaign, decrying in particular Ford's plan to relocate small-car production to Mexico. Ultimately, Trump's tweet shaming was sound and fury, signifying nothing. US automakers have been building cars in Mexico and Canada for decades, long before borderless free-trade and NAFTA became major campaign issues.  UBS auto analyst Colin Langan published a research note this week in which he assessed the impact of Congress' corporate tax reform plan — primarily a tax cut and a deal to repatriate offshore c...

  • U.S. judge throws out emissions fraud lawsuit against Mercedes-Benz
    06 Dec 2016

A U.S. judge in New Jersey on Tuesday threw out a proposed class action lawsuit alleging that Mercedes misled consumers about emissions standards in "BlueTec Clean Diesel" vehicles. Plaintiffs claimed Mercedes falsely advertised the BlueTec vehicles as having lower emissions. They said that they later found that the emissions were higher than U.S. standards permitted.  The judge said the plaintiffs failed to show they actually viewed any of Mercedes' advertisements touting the cleaner technology. He gave them leave to revise their complaint. Automakers that market diese...

  • A train with 120 BMWs crashed
    06 Dec 2016

A train carrying BMW's X-badged SUVs and crossovers from BMW's manufacturing plant in the American state of South Carolina has derailed damaging 120 vehicles. These vehicles were on their way to the Port of Charleston, S.C., for export to overseas markets.  BMW said damaged models include the BMW X3, X4, X5 and X6 but did not specify how many of each model was damaged. The vehicles were heading to Charleston from BMW’s plant near Spartanburg, S.C., which exports about 70 percent of all X models manufactured at the plant. BMW personnel are traveling to the scene and will...

  • Green car sales rose again in November!
    05 Dec 2016

If you want to analyse the US green car sales for November, you first have to start with the fact that Volkswagen stopped selling its diesel vehicles for a year now. That means that, statistically, demand levels for hybrids, plug-ins and diesels in November could finally be measured on an even playing field for the first time in 2016. But there's more to the story of what was easily this year's most impressive month for green-car sales.  Americans bought more than 39,000 green cars in November, marking a 26-percent surge from a year earlier. For comparison purposes, October a...

  • Automakers managed to make the largest YOY sales gain since February
    04 Dec 2016

After three consecutive declines, automakers managed in November to make the largest year-over-year sales gain since February, posting a 3.6 percent gain. However, it took a big jump in incentives to make that happen. Those heavy incentives – now amounting to more than 12 percent of the industry's average transaction price – might be enough for 2016 to topple last year's record by a razor-thin margin. Going into December, U.S. sales were just 6,418 vehicles ahead of last year's pace, an increase of 0.04 percent.  November and December have become big months fo...
