  • Fiat Chrysler sued for violations of U.S. clean-air rules
    17 May 2017

Fiat Chrysler is gonna be sued by the Justice Department if the talks fail to resolve differences over the automaker’s alleged violations of U.S. clean-air rules with its diesel vehicles. Expect for the lawsuit to be filled this week. The suit would mark an escalation of the U.S. government’s months-long inquiry and could expose the automaker to significant penalties.  The suit being prepared alleges the company used illegal defeat devices, one of the people said. Such devices -- software in computerized systems -- improperly disable pollution controls to enhance per...

  • US auto industry is at a crossroads!
    17 May 2017

The U.S. auto boom that fueled record sales and profits is winding down. General Motors CEO Mary Barra claims that the auto industry is changing more today than it has in the past 50 years. It's true that the U.S. auto sector had a close call during the 2008 financial crisis, when both GM and Chrysler needed federal bailouts to survive bankruptcy. But that was a pretty straightforward crisis, caused by excess labor costs and a plunge in auto sales due to a wrecked economy.  The challenge today is posed by electric and self-driving cars, and it is far more fundamental. Automakers ...

  • The car sales slowdown has its pluses
    16 May 2017

After 7 years of car sales growth new auto sales have declined 4.7 percent, following a 1.6 percent decline in March. Car manufacturers spent average of $3,814 per car sold in the first part of April but despite that the drop occurred.  For total industry sales to reach a peak and start declining isn't a surprise to anyone, and it could be great for car buyers moving forward. Even carmakers don't seem to be terribly concerned with the decline in the number of total vehicles sold, as they're making more on each car they sell right now because their product mix is more heav...

  • FCA pickups linked to reports of crash death and 2 injuries
    14 May 2017

FCA is on its way to recall more than 1.25 million pickups worldwide for a software error linked to reports of crash death and 2 injuries. This erroneous code could temporarily disable the side airbag and deployment seat of belt pretensioners- which reduce seat belt slack during impacts during a vehicle rollover spurred by a significant underbody impact, such as striking onroad debris or driving off-road.  The company will reprogram computer modules in the affected vehicles to address this error. An FCA spokesman said the likelihood of an incident was very low because a sequence...

  • Nissan’s operating profit dropped 6 percent
    11 May 2017

Nissan has reported its 2016 sales and it seems like the company didn’t really succeed in terms of car sales. Nissan’s operating profit dropped 6 percent in just ended fiscal year. The company’s operating profit declined to 742.2 billion yen ($6.67 billion) in the fiscal year ended March 31.  Net income advanced 27 percent to 663.5 billion yen ($5.96 billion) in the January-March period. Nissan attributed the rise to a one-time gain from the sale of its stake in former group supplier Calsonic Kansei Corp., which it booked in the fiscal fourth quarter. Worldwide reve...
