  • Toyota knows how to solve its pickup puzzle
    07 Aug 2017

Toyota dealers have been crying for more Tacomas and now they'll finally get some relief. The Japanese automaker has struggled to crank out enough of the segment-leading midsize pickup at its Texas and Mexico factories, even with years of overtime. Now, thanks to the partnership announced last week with Mazda, Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz is prepared to turn on the spigot to fend off midsize pickup challengers.  Toyota will build a $1.6 billion U.S. auto plant at a site to be chosen in a 50-50 partnership with Mazda that nets each of them 150,000 vehicles a year in addition...

  • Fully electric car sales up 86% in 2017
    02 Aug 2017

Despite the good promotion and ecstatic headlines about the new Tesla Model 3, the car hasn’t managed yet to become number 1, the green market is still being dominated by its big sister Model S. The Chevy Bolt, with a record sales month, took the #2 spot, inching out my estimate for the Model X. After that, the plug-in hybrid Toyota Prius Prime and Chevy Volt round out the top 5.  Despite the addition of some extremely quick competitors on its track, the Nissan LEAF landed a healthy monthly sales total — still well above 1,000 cars a month — to take the #6 spot. Aft...

  • Overall U.S. auto sales fell 7% this July
    01 Aug 2017

As automakers are doing their best to get rid off too much inventory, buyers can expect sweeter deals on small and mid-size cars. This July wasn’t expected to be a good month for US car sales but at the same time, the data are not so bad. Overall auto sales fell 7% from a year earlier to 1.42 million vehicles.  Buyers will eventually have fewer choices of passenger cars as automakers shift more of their engineering resources into crossovers, SUVs and pickups. Average discounts per vehicle rose 5% to about $3,600, compared with a year earlier. Meanwhile, transaction prices ...

  • Renault-Nissan beating Volkswagen, Toyota and General Motors
    28 Jul 2017

When two automakers with lots of potential make an alliance there is no wonder that their sales get global. That’s exactly what happened after Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA of France got together. The automakers claimed the top rank for the first time, by beating perennial top-sellers Volkswagen, Toyota and General Motors.  The Nissan-Renault alliance, which has included Mitsubishi Motors Corp. it acquired the Japanese automaker last year, sold 5,268,079 vehicles around the world in January-June. That was more than Volkswagen AG at 5,155,600, and Japan...
