Americans spent briskly at retailers in recent months, supporting hopes for a strong holiday shopping season and giving the economy momentum. Retail sales- measuring spending at restaurants, clothiers, online stores and other shops- rose 0.8% in October from the prior month, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. Sales grew 1% in September, revised figures showed, up from a previously reported 0.6% increase. Those gains marked the best two-month stretch of sales in at least two years. September and October are shaping up to be the best two-month stretch for retail sales since early 2...
Volkswagen Group claims that Audi cars with automatic transmissions have technology capable of distorting emissions when they are tested, as its premium brand is battling allegations over a reported discovery of a new cheat software device. A German newspaper “Bild am Sonntag” said a week ago that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) had this summer discovered cheating software in an automatic transmission Audi, which is unrelated to the device that triggered last year's diesel emissions test-cheating scandal at parent VW Group. The software in CARB's discov...
Volvo is recalling about 74,000 U.S. vehicles for an issue that might cause a seat belt to inadequately restrain passengers in a crash. The recall impacts each Volvo S60, S90, V60, XC60 and XC90 vehicles from the 2016-17 model years. The issue is caused by a connecting pin in the seat belt buckle, which could cause the seat belt to work inadequately during a crash. Volvo spokesman Jim Nichols said the move is “mainly precautionary,” as no incidents have been reported. He said Volvo sent out a recall notice on Oct. 28. Volvo dealers have been instructed to inspect each of...
Toyota has finally cut its forecast for North American car sales by 60,000 automobiles this year, and it's the first time when it revealed what expectations it has for US's car market. The automaker is convinced that a decline is inevitable. As American consumers shift away from fuel sippers like the Prius Hybrid and toward trucks and sport utility vehicles. Nissan Motor Co., which posted a drop in profit as it gave heftier incentives that buoyed deliveries, said it’s not seeing room for further expansion. The executive vice president of Toyota admitted that the car sa...
How far has the U.S. market tilted toward pickups, SUVs and crossovers? Automakers are on pace to sell more than 10 million light trucks in a single calendar year for the first time. Meanwhile, car sales are on pace to fall below 7 million this year for the first time since 2011 and only the fourth time since 1962. So while it's increasingly unlikely that 2016 will beat last year's record for total light-vehicle volume, sales of the big vehicles that generate the bulk of many automakers' profits are at an all-time high. From that perspective, with gasoline prices expect...
