In September 2016, 67,809 units of F-Series pickup trucks were sold with a year-over-year (or YoY) decline of 2.6%. Despite this fall, the company posted its best YTD (year-to-date) F-Series retail sales in September. As you know, the F-150 is a full-size pickup truck. The significance of these trucks is immense for Ford, as trucks typically yield higher profitability than the Small Car segment.
However, Ford is not the only player in the pickup truck segment. Other automakers such as General Motors (GM), Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCAU), and Toyota (TM) also pose competition to the F-150. The September sales of Fiat Chrysler’s Ram pickup truck jumped 30.3% YoY to reach 47,792 units, higher than GM’s Chevrolet Silverado. The sales of the Chevrolet Silverado fell 15.5% YoY in September 2016 to 45,380 units. Recently, Ford was in the news after presidential candidate Donald Trump criticized the company’s plan to shift its small car production to Mexico.
