While Mercedes-Benz sales in the U.S. dropped in May, demand on the German brand's cars in Europe and China grew considerably and helped to offset the general loss.
The automaker's sales results in Europe and in China were also helped by robust deliveries of SUVs and compact models, which rose 16 percent and 42 percent respectively. Five-month registrations at the brand were up 12 percent to 818,175. While Mercedes' U.S. volume slipped 1 percent to 29,299, in Europe, Mercedes brand sales grew 13 percent to 74,268, helped by a 4.9 percent rise to 23,343 in Germany. China sales jumped 39 percent to 38,271.
Sales of Smart cars rose 15 percent to 12,882 last month, helped by the recent launches of the new ForTwo and ForFour models. Through May, Smart sales were up 19 percent to 60,363. In general combined sales of Mercedes and Smart cars increased 13 percent in May to 183,447. In such a way, Mercedes-Benz hopes to keep pace and improve its sales results in summer.
