The all-new Volvo S90 has made its appearance at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show. The Swedes are coming off of a strong year that bested even their expectations. And there's been enough praise heaped onto the new XC90 SUV to extend to their new luxury sedan – and distract eyes from Mercedes-Benz and the 2017 E-Class. With the S90, Gothenburg hopes to take a bigger slice of the pie overflowing with competitors like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes E-Class – not to mention the Jaguar XF, Maserati Ghibli, Acura RLX, Infiniti Q70, Lexus GS, Cadillac CTS, and Lincoln MKZ.
Its powertrains are impressive as well. For the United States, there will be three engine choices available: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in a T5; a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in a T6; and a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four working with an electric drive system in a range-topping T8 Twin Engine. The S90 is longer and wider than the outgoing (and pretty much forgotten) S80 saloon and, according to Volvo, is verging on being the biggest car in its class. There’s loads of room up front, with plenty of adjustment for the steering wheel and seat, while in the rear you’ll easily fit taller adults behind a six-foot driver. Those wanting even more space will need to wait for the V90 estate.
If taking the S90’s slightly alternative route appeals, order books will open when US pricing is announced in the spring, while cars will arrive in dealers for the 66-reg plate change next September.
