BMW AG is recalling about 1 million vehicles in North America for two separate issues involving fire risks and said it may expand the recalls to other countries. One recall covers 670,000 2006-2011 U.S. 3-Series vehicles to address a wiring issue for heating and air conditioning systems that may overheat and could increase the risk of a fire. The second recall covers 740,000 U.S. 2007-2011 vehicles with a valve heater that could rust and lead to a fire in rare cases. The recall includes some 128i vehicles, 3-Series, 5-Series and X3, X5 and Z4 vehicles. BMW spokesman Michael Rebstock...
Heading into the final 2 months of the year, we’ve got some records on the line for the U.S. automotive industry. Japanese automakers are battling for the titles of America’s best selling cars and crossovers, and the overall industry could record a third straight 17 million-unit year for the first time ever. The overall industry this year has shown some restraint on incentives, but spending has steadily increased amid leveling average transaction prices. Expect incentive spending for the year to be up 11 percent through October to an average of $3,624 per vehicle, includi...
The hurricane recovery and the strong truck and SUV sales weren’t enough to keep the U.S. car sales high in October. Sales for the month fell 1.3 percent compared with a year ago as slowing demand made it almost certain that 2017 will be the first year with declining sales in seven years. Full-year sales almost certainly will fall below last year's record of more than 17.5 million, although most analysts say demand is still healthy. Automakers reported selling 1.35 million vehicles for the month. Ford, Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen all reported gains for October on ...
Cadillac and Audi might already tour their semiautonomous driving systems, but BMW is taking some more time before rolling out a high-speed self-driving system. BMW is spending the next couple of years working with suppliers and testing prototypes to ensure the automaker can introduce a system that can operate at high speeds in most highway driving situations, with the added benefit of being a backup operator in fully automated vehicles. BMW's system won't be available until 2021, which puts it several years behind competitors. BMW chose to wait until it could introduce a sy...
Ford and Volkswagen have to face new problems, as a new coalition of environmental groups have launched a campaign to persuade automakers to live by their commitments for meeting emissions and fuel economy targets for the next decade. It accused the industry of colluding with the Trump administration to loosen the clean-car standards. The coalition initially plans to pressure Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen Group of America to publicly support the fuel efficiency program, one of President Barack Obama's key initiatives for curbing greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. It w...
