  • Hybrid, plug-in sales growth slows on eve of new electric car's debut
    04 Aug 2017

With Tesla Model 3 deliveries beginning, July may be the last month for a while in which the growth of green-car sales in the U.S. can be measured with some sense of accuracy and perspective, as all signs point to a spike in year-over-year growth from here on out. And with that in mind, things didn't look great last month. In fact, year-over-year sales of hybrids and plug-in vehicles were down for the first time this year, falling 9.6 percent from a year earlier to about 37,600 units.   Plug-in-vehicle sales remained on the positive side of the ledger, though they slowed to a 16 ...

  • Fully electric car sales up 86% in 2017
    02 Aug 2017

Despite the good promotion and ecstatic headlines about the new Tesla Model 3, the car hasn’t managed yet to become number 1, the green market is still being dominated by its big sister Model S. The Chevy Bolt, with a record sales month, took the #2 spot, inching out my estimate for the Model X. After that, the plug-in hybrid Toyota Prius Prime and Chevy Volt round out the top 5.  Despite the addition of some extremely quick competitors on its track, the Nissan LEAF landed a healthy monthly sales total — still well above 1,000 cars a month — to take the #6 spot. Aft...

  • Maserati going all-electric in 2 years
    01 Aug 2017

There are many automakers nowadays switching to the safe electric side, and we can’t ignore that. Maserati has promised that all its new Maseratis will be part-electric starting with 2019. It seems like Maserati is going to be the end of conglomerate’s push towards electrification, Ferrari by the way will follow up.  The first all-new fully-electric Maserati won’t arrive until 2020, based on the Alfieri concept of 2014. Before then, 2019 should see all existing product lines fitted with electric motors in as-yet unconfirmed configurations – although ...

  • BMW aims to electrify all brands and model lines
    26 Jul 2017

BMW has officially announced that it plans to produce a fully electric version of the three-door hatchback Mini. The car will go into production in 2019, and the battery electric drivetrain will be produced at BMW's Bavarian facilities, then transported to Plant Oxford where it will join the cars. BMW says there will remain a diesel variant in addition to the petrol, plug-in hybrid, and EV versions of the Mini. No prototype shots have been released of the upcoming cars; the current one was unveiled in late 2013.  The UK production location isn't the only place where BMW build...

  • Elon Musk tweeted photos of the first Tesla Model 3
    10 Jul 2017

Elon Musk showed off the first Tesla Model 3 vehicle on Twitter and Instagram over the weekend, sharing pictures of the shiny new four-door sedan parked in front of Tesla's production plant in Fremont, California. Tesla board member Ira Ehrenpreis was the first person to pony up the full deposit for a Model 3, and had rights to the first production unit. But he gifted it to the company's billionaire founder as a present on his 46th birthday, Musk said.   Tesla is aiming to dramatically ramp up output of the eagerly awaited electric vehicle in the coming months. The first 30 c...
