BMW aims to electrify all brands and model lines

BMW has officially announced that it plans to produce a fully electric version of the three-door hatchback Mini. The car will go into production in 2019, and the battery electric drivetrain will be produced at BMW's Bavarian facilities, then transported to Plant Oxford where it will join the cars. BMW says there will remain a diesel variant in addition to the petrol, plug-in hybrid, and EV versions of the Mini. No prototype shots have been released of the upcoming cars; the current one was unveiled in late 2013.

The UK production location isn't the only place where BMW builds Minis, as the former Volvo/Mitsubishi/Smart NedCar plant in the Netherlands has been tooled to build some of the 360,000 Minis built yearly. UK Business Secretary Greg Clark considers the choice to build EV Minis in Britain a "vote of confidence" despite Brexit, and that it would see battery technology development boosted in the UK. By the time the EV version starts production, UK will likely have already left the European Union.

The electrification of the Mini is part of BMW Group's continuing addition of full-electric or plug-in versions to all its brands and model series. Of all the vehicles it will sell in 2025, 15-25 percent will be electrified in one way or the other. Similarly to Volvo, BMW sees flexible production to be in a key position in the future: The facilities would have to be able to build all versions at the same time, as markets fluctuate depending on incentives and infrastructure. If EVs sell strongly, the production process can quickly respond to the demand. An electric Mini underwent trials back in 2008, so the full-scale production vehicle would have over a decade's worth of engineering behind it.

General Motors promised us other things but that’s how it all turned to be, even if it said it will invest $1 billion in U.S. factories now it announced to temporarily cut off 1,100 workers in May as its Lansing Delta Township assembly plant in Michigan shifts production to Tennessee. • BMW Records Huge Increase in Electrified Car Sales
    17 Jul 2018

BMW has been showing strong sales numbers over the past year across its range, but electrified vehicles have really taken a jump. According to BMW, compared to the same month last year worldwide electrified vehicle sales have shown an increase of 47.6 percent. This means that 13,806 BMW I, iPerformance and Mini electric vehicles found new homes. It is only a small fraction of the 200,000+ cars BMW sells each month but it is a big improvement, none the less.  The situation is changing rapidly though. A member of the board of management at BMW estimated that by 2025 up to 25% of all ca...

  • Mercedes-Benz Pop Up Store Could Be Coming To A Mall Near You
    16 Jul 2018

Going to a car dealership isn’t always a pleasant experience. There are some ways to avoid a bad experience, but it would just be simpler if automakers allowed you to look at their cars somewhere else – like on the internet. Mercedes-Benz is looking to inch away from the painful dealership experience.  Mercedes pop-up stores are coming to the US this year. Unlike traditional dealerships, pop-up stores are designed to focus on showing off the product, rather than just selling it. Mercedes experimented last year with pop-up stores in Atlanta and Miami and will follow up wit...
