Tighter emissions rules in China and Europe put the global automakers and some consumers in tough situations, with an only choice they'll have to face, we are talking about embracing plug-in vehicles. The electrification of cars is a trend now, the electric car sales expanded by 50% in just 5 years. In Europe, green cars benefit increasingly from subsidies, tax breaks and other perks, while combustion engines face mounting penalties including driving and parking restrictions. China, struggling with catastrophic pollution levels in major cities, is aggressively pushing plug-in ve...
This Tuesday General Motors has asked the supreme Court to overturn an appellate court's ruling that the automaker's 2009 bankruptcy does not shield it from lawsuits over a faulty ignition switch linked to at least 124 deaths and 274 injuries. Whether you like it or not, the petition market a last-ditch effort by GM to block hundreds of customer lawsuits over faulty ignition switches, and other vehicles components, on grounds that they were barred by the automaker's 2009 bankruptcy sale to a new corporate entity. In its petition, GM said the federal bankruptcy code permi...
A U.S. judge in New Jersey on Tuesday threw out a proposed class action lawsuit alleging that Mercedes misled consumers about emissions standards in "BlueTec Clean Diesel" vehicles. Plaintiffs claimed Mercedes falsely advertised the BlueTec vehicles as having lower emissions. They said that they later found that the emissions were higher than U.S. standards permitted. The judge said the plaintiffs failed to show they actually viewed any of Mercedes' advertisements touting the cleaner technology. He gave them leave to revise their complaint. Automakers that market diese...
BHP Billiton is hot for electric vehicles. The Australian resources giant, which mines metals and coal used for both steelmaking and fueling power plants, is increasingly optimistic that there will be a surge in demand for some of its products as consumers opt for electric vehicles and other renewable energy technologies. Fiona Wild, BHP’s vice president, says that as we see more renewables and EVs, we also will see an impact on copper demand. One million EVs were sold between 2010 and 2015, largely driven by regulatory mandates in important auto markets including the US, Chi...
German politicians are calling for a total ban on internal combustion engines by 2030, and, not content with deciding their own affairs, they also want it to apply across the whole European Union. Although we can agree a bit on the thing that plug-in cars are better for the environment, we were thinking on how will the EU react to that? People are used to these powerful petrol cars, and banning them wouldn't it mean banning all of the car lovers? The Bundesrat, or federal council, is asking the EU not just to consider its proposals to outlaw petrol and diesel cars, but to implem...
