From the moment EVs made their debut in U.S. till nowadays, plug-in hybrids have made a long way. Just by seeing the glorious results made by introducing Tesla's Model S to the car market, we can make a conclusion on how much the industry was able to change within 6 years. Nissan just sold its 100,000 Leaf in the US. BMW, too, would have you know that it has been pulling its weight in this grand acceleration of EVs. In fact, the German automaker has also recently hit a major milestone since it first launched battery-powered cars under its i sub-brand. BMW has announced that it has ach...
Hyundai is recalling 62,811 Sonata and Sonata Hybrid cars in the United States because the panoramic glass sunroof can detach while driving and fly into traffic. The recall covers model year 2015-2016 Sonata Hybrid vehicles manufactured Dec. 8, 2014, to Aug. 18, 2015, and Hyundai Sonata vehicles manufactured May 28, 2014, to March 18, 2016, equipped with the panoramic sunroof option. According to recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there is a problem with the bonding of the wind deflector anchor plate in front of the sunroof. It's three-quarters of the way through the year, and green-car watchers can probably surmise that 2016 won't likely be a banner year for sales of hybrids, plug-in hybrids, or – gasp – diesels. Through September, US green-car sales have fallen a solid 19 percent from a year earlier to about 321,000 units. And that's factoring plug-in vehicle sales that have risen 16 percent to almost 87,000 units. With that context, then, September wasn't a bad month: last month's green-car sales were down just one percent from a year earlier to more than 40,000 vehicles. &n...
Japanese automakers Toyota Motor and Nissan Group posted U.S. sales increases in September, while Honda sales were flat, despite projections of an overall industry decline for the month. Toyota's sales rose 1.5% for the month to 197,260 vehicles, as the company's namesake Toyota brand rose 1.4% and its luxury Lexus brand increased 2%. American Honda sold 133,655 units in September, just 95 fewer than it sold a year earlier. The namesake Honda brand recorded a 1.5% increase, while the Acura luxury brand fell 12.9%. Nissan Group posted a surprisingly strong month for U.S. sale...
Volvo's CEO says that Volvo Car USA has turned the corner with two of its 90-series vehicles on sale and others due early next year. A U.S. sales increase of 29 percent through August is evidence that Volvo's gutsy revival strategy was the right choice. Volvo is building all its vehicles on its flexible Scalable Product Architecture, or SPA. And it is using only turbo and supercharged Drive-E engines paired with optional plug-in hybrid power. Lex Kerssemakers says that the company is on a turnaround in the U.S. that started with the XC90. Volvo was starved for product for y...
