One sector of the U.S. automotive industry will be quite unhappy at the announcement of the new car brand, from the Chinese industrial group Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. We are talking about the franchised car dealers. The new brand, aimed at Millennials, is likely to be sold under a non-traditional retailing approach, according to cryptic postings on various websites. Geely and Volvo, which Geely owns, likely are planning to sell via the Internet and company-owned stores, not through franchised dealers. If you don't know how to raise your U.S. market share in 2016, here is the answer – you have to turbocharge fleet sales. Actually, that may be the only way in an increasingly competitive market that has hit a plateau after six years of growth. Fleet activity has defined overall sales winners and losers, according to industry sources that track bulk sales to rental companies and commercial and government buyers. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s U.S. unit failed to persuade a federal judge to throw out an antitrust lawsuit claiming it pushed dealers to submit fraudulent sales numbers to prop up the carmaker’s share price. Two dealerships owned by the Napleton Auto Group, including Napleton’s Arlington Heights Motors in Illinois, originally sued Fiat Chrysler in January, alleging racketeering, violations of antitrust laws and breach of contract. The original suit was never served on FCA and an amended complaint was filed in March. FCA denied the allegations in the suit. U.S. D...
Japanese automakers Toyota Motor and Nissan Group posted U.S. sales increases in September, while Honda sales were flat, despite projections of an overall industry decline for the month. Toyota's sales rose 1.5% for the month to 197,260 vehicles, as the company's namesake Toyota brand rose 1.4% and its luxury Lexus brand increased 2%. American Honda sold 133,655 units in September, just 95 fewer than it sold a year earlier. The namesake Honda brand recorded a 1.5% increase, while the Acura luxury brand fell 12.9%. Nissan Group posted a surprisingly strong month for U.S. sale...
Even as incentive spending reaches a record high, U.S. new-vehicle sales are projected to decline for a second consecutive month. The forecasts reinforce the notion that industry sales have leveled off after six consecutive years of gains coming out of the recession. But analysts say the market is not on the brink of a downturn, either. Auto sales are tracking just about even with last year’s record-breaking pace, so there’s good reason to believe that they’ve hit a high plateau. At the very least, automakers can feel good that sales are consistently hovering at o...
