Are you waiting for the Frankfurt auto show coming up next month? If yes, we have good news for you. It seems Mercedes will be showing an updated S-Class cabriolet and coupe. The new teaser trailer from the company shows off the cabrio and its fancy new OLED taillights.
You can see the left rear lamp in close detail, the better to highlight all 33 individual OLED elements. They're arranged in three rows, and you can see how the company took advantage of the thin profile of OLEDs in how the elements overlap each other and curve around the lamp. The company says each one is individually controllable, and the video demonstrates how they can light up in sequence. The obvious way to showcase in normal use would be as sequential turn signals like on the Mustang and Audi A4, among others, but Mercedes may have something else in mind, since the car also has traditional amber turn signals.
Aside from the fancy new taillights, earlier spy shots tell us that the front and rear bumpers have been very mildly revised. Based on what we know from the revised S-Class sedan, we would expect the base model coupe and cabrio to now feature the twin-turbo, 463-hp 4.0-liter V8 instead of the current 4.7-liter model. The S63 will probably also get the same twin-scroll twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 as the sedan with 603 hp. The S65 V12 model will probably see no mechanical changes. And of course, keep an eye out for ever more sophisticated semi-autonomous technology.
