After a survey a huge revelation was made, dealerships are vulnerable to cyberattacks which might bring to putting in danger the personal information of customers. The study shows that after such attacks the possibility of a buyer to come back again is close to minimum, also this lost data would prove an immediate business threat to dealerships. A firm from New York surveyed 2000 dealerships in five states, in order to show the importance of security. After the client realizes his data got compromised he would never buy something from here again, that's what 84% of the respondents answered. Also it was found out that 33% of consumers consider security one of the most important things in buying a vehicle, and it's one of the reason they would buy a vehicle from a dealership they can trust, and not from others.
Of course auto dealerships are considered as prime locations for hackers who are looking for personal data, sometimes dealerships have more personal information on a client than even local banks do, but when it comes to hacking banks it's a lot harder than hacking a dealership. As a potential weak part for dealerships is considered the usual free Wi-Fi connections. If you're a sophisticated hacker and the Wi-Fi isn't separated from the main network it would take you only six minutes to break it. The most important thing about this survey is to show to dealers that they need network engineers who will work with computer security, because for now only 30% of the surveyed dealerships have one. They think more about selling process, bringing the right cars to people and forget about hackers, when the probability that you'll become their victim is really high.
After all, if your client loses his trust in you, will he come back? He definitely won't, and considering the rumors spread fast you might lose the whole business at one time. Isn't it easier to just hire a specialist?
