General Motors announced it has a new vice president of design. This job with global responsibilitywill be done by the Australian Mike Simcoe, 58, stationed overseas for much of his 33 years with GM. Simcoe is the first non-American to assume the mantle as GM’s global design chief.
Simcoe brought a contribution to the design of many of the brand's models and has had a hand in shaping many vehicles familiar in North America. His portfolio is filled with such models as Holden SSX concept, Buick Sceptre concept, Holden Ute, Holden Cross 8 concept, Pontiac G8 GXP. As part of his ever growing responsibilities at GM, Simcoe reformed the company’s design studio in South Korea after GM purchased the car making operations of the bankrupt Daewoo group.
Simcoe's biggest hit in North America is Chevrolet Camaro. The reborn pony car went on sale in 2010, echoing the general look of the 1969 Camaro without being a retro car. It led the segment in sales from 2010 to 2014, until the redesigned Mustang debuted.
