The McLaren P1 is a marvel of modern engineering. Still, not everything out there is perfect and the P1 is proof of this. A batch of the cars were just hit with a recall notice.
The problems are tied to a defective secondary hood latch that doesn’t re-engage properly, so if the primary latch is inadvertently released, the entire hood may pop open at any time, even when the P1 is moving.
Such a scenario would obviously be unfavorable and could cause a crash, especially if the driver is caught off guard by the sudden opening of the hood.
That would be an especially bad situation if the car was moving at the P1's 220-mph top speed.
The recall affects cars built between March 1st, 2013 through October 31st, 2015. Affected vehicles will be outfitted with a revised latch to restore proper operation.
That's a total of 122 potentially hood-afflicted McLaren P1s.
McLaren, of course, will fix the issue free of charge. The recall is expected to begin this month.
