In an attempt to improve the public image after the emissions scandal, Volkswagen is planning to drop the famous "Das Auto" slogan in the coming advertising campaign.
Launched in 2007 under ousted boss Martin Winterkorn, the slogan has had the advantage of simplicity, merely meaning "The Car". However, the German carmaker's leaders, anxious to proclaim a reformed corporate culture, have criticised it as out of step with a company trying to show new-found humility.
Volkswagen is trying to grapple with how to pull itself out of a nosedive that has threatened to alienate it with its most loyal customers. The automaker admitted to rig up to 11 million cars with small diesel engines worldwide to beat emissions tests.
The new campaign was disclosed in a meeting of 2,000 group managers, says Reuters, which first reported the change that was confirmed by Volkswagen officials.
