America has its favorites when it comes to cars and it's Toyota Camry. Being a leader for 15 years, that is something any car maker would want for its cars. Exclude the pickups and trucks, and no one else can beat the Camry. The question you might have now is will it be able to keep the crown as it got redisigned? We've seen impressive sales of Toyota's RAV4 and Honda CR-V, since buyers are switching to more versatile SUVs and forget about passenger cars. The Camry, last reworked four years ago, has made a living by being a solidly reliable if dull ride for people who si...
Not even a week has passed since Uber introduced a fleet of self-driving Volvo XC90s to the streets of San Francisco, all in defiance of California regulators telling Uber to stop. Since then, the autonomous Volvos have been seen running red lights, ignoring stop signs, and failing to yield to pedestrians, obviously all dangerous and illegal moves. It seems there is one more problem to add to that list, as Uber has admitted to The Guardian that its vehicles have problems navigating through bike lanes. Like with the other incidents, there have been first-hand reports of Uber's Vo...
Almost a week passes without some announcement from automakers, suppliers – even ride-hailing services – about the impending arrival of self-driving cars. Experts claim that a fully automated vehicle that is 100 percent safe 100 percent of the time and can operate on any street in any weather condition in the U.S. is not right around the corner. The obstacles to perfecting and mass producing fully automated vehicles that can safely transport a passenger door-to-door with no human intervention are formidable: sensing equipment, such as cameras, lidar and radar, has to ge...
A Silicon Valley startup called “Otto” has just been bought by Uber, with the goal of putting a fleet of the self-driving trucks on the nation’s highways in as little as two years. At 55 miles an hour, with no one behind the wheel, Otto has tested its technology on closed roads. For test runs on the busy freeway, a safety driver sits behind the wheel, just in case. "We're living in an on-demand era where we all want to press a button and have something arrive as fast as possible. Well, there's a truck behind all of those products." said Lior Ron, cofoun...
Volvo has announced a partnership with the ride-sharing company Uber to develop fully autonomous cars together. In this joint project, Volvo will manufacture the base vehicles which will then be bought by Uber. The two companies are each investing $300 million towards this project. Uber’s chief executive, Travis Kalanick, said: “Over one million people die in car accidents every year. These are tragedies that self-driving technology can help solve, but we can’t do this alone.“That’s why our partnership with a great manufacturer like Volvo is so important. Vol...
