  • Keyless Cars Caused Dozens of Deaths in the US
    15 May 2018

A report made by New York Times found that dozens of people have been poisoned by carbon monoxide since 2006 after failing to turn off the ignition on their keyless cars. More exactly, 28 of them died and 45 others suffered injuries.  More than half of the vehicles sold annually in the US now have keyless ignitions. The keyless ignition system consists of a device that is carried by the driver, allowing him to start the car with a press of a button linked to the fob. If the key fob is not detected the car will not start. However, if the car has been started it will continue to run ev...

  • The internal combustion engine disappears from the new-car options
    08 Nov 2017

The range of the average battery-electric family crossover has increased to nearly 400 miles on a single charge, after years of continued incremental improvements in lithium-based batteries, combined with extreme weight savings from lightweight materials, a new generation of superefficient electric motors, and advances in automated driving that reduce energy waste.  The new generation of fast chargers enables vehicles with depleted battery packs to be 80 percent recharged in the time it takes to down a cup of Tim Horton's coffee and doughnut, about five minutes. Even exotic sport...

  • GM asks Court to reverse ignition switch ruling linked to 124 deaths
    13 Dec 2016

This Tuesday General Motors has asked the supreme Court to overturn an appellate court's ruling that the automaker's 2009 bankruptcy does not shield it from lawsuits over a faulty ignition switch linked to at least 124 deaths and 274 injuries.  Whether you like it or not, the petition market a last-ditch effort by GM to block hundreds of customer lawsuits over faulty ignition switches, and other vehicles components, on grounds that they were barred by the automaker's 2009 bankruptcy sale to a new corporate entity. In its petition, GM said the federal bankruptcy code permi...

  • GM earnings double in the third quarter
    25 Oct 2016

Strong US and China car sales and a drop in costs for the faulty ignitions recall helped General Motors double profits in the third quarter. The sales in the two biggest GM markets helped the company offset ongoing slumps in Europe, South America and elsewhere. With unit sales up 3.8% from a year ago to 2.42 million cars and trucks in the quarter, helped by a 17.3% jump in China.  The company meanwhile warned that its hopes for a return to stability in Europe were at risk to fallout from Britain's vote to pull out of the European Union, including the weak pound. Breaking eve...

  • Justice Department hasn’t decided on specific charges for Volkswagen
    17 Aug 2016

Volkswagen has a lot to worry about with respect to its diesel-emissions cheating scandal. On the civil side, it’s already anticipating divvying out $15 billion to make right with regulators, states, and customers over hundreds of thousands of diesel vehicles that contain a software-based cheat allowing them to emit many times the permissible amount of nitrogen oxide. While the settlement with U.S. regulatory authorities largely resolved VW's obligations to the federal government, the automaker also faces potential criminal charges relating to the use of emissions-cheating software i...
