If president Donald Trump slaps a 25 percent tariff on imported cars, it may cost the U.S auto industry 1 million annual car sales, and that’s just the low end of the estimated damage. The projection by researcher LMC Automotive assumes that automakers would absorb at least half the cost of a tax on imported vehicles. If companies pass the full 25 percent cost on to consumers, it could snuff out about 2 million sales or more than 10 percent of annual U.S. deliveries. President’s order last month to investigate auto imports for potential trade penalties on national securi...
For car dealers, a sunny sales outlook at the start of 2018 has been overshadowed by rising interest rates, shrinking customer budgets and cost increases. Their optimism for the next quarter lost 14 points to just 56 on a 100-point scale, according to the Cox Automotive Dealer Sentiment Index. The report, based on a survey of more than 1,000 independent and franchise car dealers from April 30 to May 14, shows prospective buyers grappling with tight finances despite a Republican tax cut that many sales executives had expected to boost consumer spending. The shift has left many of the big international auto shows grasping for answers as brands increasingly connect with consumers through Instagram and Yo...
Ford Motor announced Wednesday that it’s killing sedans from its U.S. dealerships, exception making only its legendary Mustang. By saying good buy to Focus, Fusion, Fiesta, and Taurus, it will double down on trucks and sports utilities. The Focus nameplate will stick around, only in the form of a crossover utility. Ford is not alone, though. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles already cut the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200, focusing on more profitable Jeep SUVs and Ram pickups. General Motors has been reducing its sedan production, also, cutting back on its Cruze compact production. C...
Sedan sales are falling across the industry, and automakers are reacting to this. General Motors reacts by halving Cruze production at its Lordstown, Ohio factory, probably impacting around 1,500 workers there. This factory only produces Cruze, and there are working just under 3,000 employees. The news comes as sedan sales, in general, are down 13.2 percent this year while crossover, SUV, and truck sales grew seven percent. Sales for the Cruze are even worse than the industry average, 28 percent. Last year, Chevy sold just over 184,000 Cruze models. The sales' decline forced the...
