Kia and Alfa Romeo named finalists of the North American Car Awards

It’s the first time ever for Kia and Alfa Romeo to be named finalists for the North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year Awards. The nine vehicles still in the running for the 2018 awards also include two chances for Honda to extend its winning streak to a third consecutive year. The three car finalists announced Wednesday at the Los Angeles Auto Show are the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Kia Stinger. The Camry and Accord, which have long battled for supremacy in the now-fading midsize sedan segment, will be up against Kia's first serious performance car.

In the most competitive category, the utility finalists are the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Honda Odyssey and Volvo XC60. They beat out 12 other semifinalists, including three from General Motors and three from Volkswagen Group of AmericaThe truck award is a battle between Ford and Chevrolet. Only three vehicles were eligible, so all of them -- the Chevy Colorado ZR2, Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator - automatically became finalists.

For the first time in the awards' 25 years, nothing from a Detroit 3 brand was even under consideration in the car category this year. To be eligible, a vehicle has to be new or substantially changed and go on sale in the calendar year. The Tesla Model 3 was eligible, but the company declined to provide vehicles for testing, saying it was focused on increasing production. Other car semifinalists included the Hyundai Ioniq, BMW 5 series and Porsche PanameraHonda won Truck of the Year in 2017 for the Ridgeline pickup and Car of the Year in 2016 for the Civic.

  • General Motors to lay off 1,100 workers
    06 Mar 2017

General Motors promised us other things but that’s how it all turned to be, even if it said it will invest $1 billion in U.S. factories now it announced to temporarily cut off 1,100 workers in May as its Lansing Delta Township assembly plant in Michigan shifts production to Tennessee. Last year it added 800 jobs at its spring hill, Tennessee plant to build the new version of GMC Acadia SUV.  The Lansing plant will continue building the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse after it retools for a month. GM also has announced other U.S. factory cuts. U.S. President Donald Trump ha...

  • Car Ownership Will Probably Dip by 2025
    22 May 2018

Most auto industry execs think that half of today’s car owners will lose interest in owning a car by 2025. Of the nearly 1,000 execs surveyed via KPMG for Business Insider Intelligence, 60 percent agree, while 22 disagree, and 8 percent strongly disagree.  That’s not very representative because it targets people who already see the value of a car and ignores millennials who may never own a vehicle. While there is some mixed opinion about millennial attitudes toward car ownership. That generation is buying fewer cars than previous generations at their age.  ...

  • Volvo Will Dump Diesel Starting With Next S60 Sedan
    18 May 2018

Volvo will not offer a diesel in its new S60 sedan, which will be released this spring. The new S60 will be available with a range of four-cylinder gasoline engines as well as two versions of its gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain.  This move comes as Volvo accelerates its shift toward electrified powertrains and away from diesels, which accounted for almost 80 percent of its sales in Europe last year. Diesel sales have taken a hit in Europe because of potential bans on older, more polluting cars with the powertrain and the high cost of improvements to ensure that new d...
